Somebody told me about a pretty radical idea the other day and I just haven’t decided if I we should try it yet! A lady told me about a friend that prepares the exact same thing every week. Every monday it’s dish A for dinner, every Tuesday dish B and so on. Her family knows exactly what to expect, she knows exactly what to put on her shopping list, and she knows how much her grocery bill is going to be. My first thought was that my family, my husband especially, would complain about the repetition. I definitely didn’t think my husband would be in favor of such a plan – but I was wrong! He heard me talking about it and intervened: “that sounds like my kind of plan!” My response? “For reals?!?”
So apparently as long as they were seven meals that he liked, he’d really be okay with it. I’m not entirely sure that I would, ๐ , so I thought that perhaps one night a week could be “Surprise Night” or something, where I fix something different every Thursday night, for example.
So what do you think? Would you be able to handle cooking the same thing every week? Would your family like it? (Anybody else out there do that already?) I’m still trying to wrap my brain around it. For this week, I’m sticking to a simple plan and we’ll just see if any of it repeats for next week. ๐
Monday: Breakfast Casserole; Chili; (no snack); Rice & Beans & Cornbread
Tuesday: Oatmeal, Fruit, Bacon; Sandwiches & Veggies; (No snack – family pictures!); Crockpot Potato Soup
Wednesday: Pancakes & Turkey Bacon; Turkey Dogs & Chili; Chocolate Graham Crackers & Peanut Butter; Tacos
Thursday: Cereal; Pizza; Veggies & Ranch; Chicken Fettuccine Alfredo & Salad
Friday: Eggs & Bacon; Homemade Chicken Noodle Soup; Popcorn & Raisins; Grilled Hamburgers
Saturday: Biscuits & Gravy & Bacon; Super Nachos; Muffins; Chicken Cheesy Enchiladas & Spanish Rice
Sunday: Waffles, Fruit, Whipped Cream; Tuna Salad Sandwiches; Cheese & Meat & Crackers; Family Casserole

Oh I could never do it…in fact I rarely make the same dish twice. I love variety what can I say..lol. There are just too many great recipes out there that I want to try especially from my Taste of Home magazines!
When ever I ask DH for a dinner suggestions he always asks what we had for dinner last week. His comment is that he seemed to like everything or he would have remembered. I need to figure this thing out too. I’m thinking either haveing the same thing every 2 weeks or having a certian thing on a certain night. For example; Sunday chicken, Tuesady pasta Wednesady Lentils. If I do that then I can mix it up a bit. But I have to say that your comment on the fact that you will pretty much know your grocery bill… Read more »
Yeah, the grocery thing was what got me too. ๐ I mean, if we got tired of a thing, we could always change to some other dinner for that night for a while. Or I could just plan on every month changing one. But honestly there are only so many things my family eats anyway!! =)
I don’t think I’d like cooking that way. For one thing, I like trying new things reasonably frequently – cooking is more fun that way. ๐ For another, I don’t like being locked into a plan like that – what if something comes up or the baby is sick or the toddler is cranky or or or and you can’t make the chicken fetuccine? As a mother of a two-year-old and a six-month-old, flexibility is KEY in our house.
I know that my hubby wouldn’t go for that as far as dinner goes but since I cook for him separately most nights. Anyways… it doesn’t matter for the kids. There’s only so many things that they will willingly eat all of, right? Just trying to make the house happy ๐
Your menu sounds really yummy!! I’ve never thought about having super nachos for lunch. Thanks for the idea.
I think my husband would be fine with the weekly menu, but I don’t think *I* could do it. I would get bored. I have about 50-60 recipes that I rotate through, usually in order. I do the specific order so that we don’t have chicken 3 days in a row, or Mexican 2 days in a row, etc.
I don’t cook for a family, so take my thoughts with a grain of salt. But, I do something very similar. I have three to four lunch options that endlessly repeat, and there are several nights that are certain food nights. Sunday night is always “lu way” night and so on. I only have four breakfast options–and typically stick to one of two most days. I don’t mind the repeats at all. I think you are smart to include a “surprise night” since you are hesitant to fully embrace the idea. Or, you could leave the weekends–such as Friday and… Read more »
Looks like a great week! Please let us know how it goes over. Making the same thing would definitely simplify my life. I think my husband would like it but I would probably get bored. My husband did suggest that we repeat themes every week, (Mexican Monday, Pasta Tuesday, etc) and I tried that but I kinda forgot about it after a few weeks.
