Summer Reading Challenge (for My 15 Year Old Daughter)

SummerReadingChallenge15Post

I’ve slacked off on assigned reading. So what’s a good homeschool mom to do? She institutes a Summer Reading Challenge, with an incentive of course!

So I’ve come up with a list of ten books, of varying genre, length and reading level, that I want my 15 year old daughter to read.

One of the books, Inkspell, is a book that she wants to read. (She finished reading Inkheart a few months ago.) Two of them (marked with asterisks) are books she already needs to read for her Lifepac English 1 Course. I don’t want to get in the way of getting those done so they are on the list, too. The rest are books that I enjoyed as a kid or that I want her to read for one reason or another.

(I’m also making lists for the other two children, too.)

The Summer Reading Challenge List

1. Wuthering Heights (free on Kindle!)

2. Inkspell

3. To Kill a Mockingbird

4. The Diary of Anne Frank

5. Fahrenheit 451

6. The  Grapes of Wrath

7. Little Women (free on Kindle!)

8. And Then There Were None

9. 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea* (free on Kindle!)

10. The Miracle Worker*

The Challenge Incentive

I’ve decided to go with money. Money is a great motivator!

Complete the list by the end of:

  • June – Reward $4/each
  • July – Reward $2/each
  • August – Reward $1/each

“Extra Credit:”

  • Write a brief summary of each for an extra $1/each.
  • Write a longer book report of two for an extra $2/each.

Max reward potential: $54

Will she accept the challenge? Well, if she doesn’t, I don’t have to pay up, do I? ;0)

However, since all of my children want to save up money for things they want, I think they will take the challenge. We’ll see!
