What is a mind-mapping application, you may ask?

Remember back in grade school when you had to brain storm for a big report? You’d write your main idea in the middle of a piece of paper, you’d branch other ideas out from that, and points about each idea off of those. Enter the technology age and you’ve got mind-mapping applications.

Why would students benefit from using a mind-mapping application? Mind mapping is not only good for preparing for the writing process, but also for studying for exams, prepping for a speech, or organizing any kind of project. This might be especially useful for the visual learner.

Some applications are available for various fees, but many are available for free. Joel @ Lifehack has put together this list of 11 Free Mind Mapping Applications as well as some of their advantages and disadvantages.

I’m going to try out Mind42 with my daughter, since you have the ability to add images and since it’s a web-based app – which means it doesn’t matter if we get on the mac or on the pc. If you have another mind-mapping app that you use, or if you’ve used one of the programs on Joel’s list, let us know what you like and don’t like.

Hey, y’all! I’m Amber and I wear many hats. I drink a ton of coffee and I’m constantly sweeping crumbs off the floor. After 20+ years of homeschooling, we are starting over at preschool with our fourth, Lil Miss Mouse. She keeps us young and she’s the main reason for my excessive coffee consumption. Drink up!
