It’s back to school, for realz, finally, here at our house. We “started” yesterday– though it was really more about getting up and getting a good start to our day and week. We did bible and language arts, a labor day activity and we went to the park. Today we had a full school day and it went really well!
One of the things we’re doing differently this year is expanding our “bible” class to included intentional character training. In addition to daily, as needed, “on the job training,” I felt the need to take time to intentionally study and instill some biblical virtues in our children. We’ve had an increase in bickering, disobedience, laziness and so on and so forth so 3 days a week we’ll be doing character study and 2 days a week we’ll be doing “Who is God?”
This week we’re studying laziness and hard work. You know, in honor of Labor Day and all. ; )
Other virtues on our list to study soon:
- Obedience/Disobedience
- Complaining/Ingratitude/Gratitude/Thankfulness
- Selfishness/Generosity
- Haste/Prudence
- Impatience/Patience
- Anger/Self-Control
- Shifting Blame/Accepting Responsibility
- Harming Others/Loving Our Brother
I’m using our book “For Instruction in Righteousness” to help us with our character study. We can look up what the bible has to say about them and discuss them together. Some of the verses we’ll add to our memory verse box. (Some of them are already there.) 😉
How do you teach Christian virtues to your children (in addition to everyday in the moment kind of stuff?) Do you have any good books or resources that you recommend?

That’s a great idea to put it that way! I’m going to have to check that book out! Thank you for posting on this.
Great V! We have done character studies in the past, and FIR is the best book to use for that! Love it!!
Hi from HHH
We definitely incorporate virtues into our homeschool day; however, I haven’t outlined them this specifically. I like you list and I’ll need to check out your book recommendation. Thanks for the link.
We began our homeschool year by revisiting our morning jobs. Posting these little cards has really empowered the children to start their day off productive and independent. It fits in perfectly with your laziness / hard work virtue.
