In our house, we do school year round. Oh, yes. We do. Ok, some of you might think how horrible and awful that is. But the truth is that we’ve tried other systems and it is just too hard to get back into the swing of school if we take off more than a couple weeks at a time. The kids don’t seem to mind it, at least not yet. AND, since we do school year round, that makes up for all the days we skip throughout the year. 😀
On the other hand, since we are doing year round and since we aren’t finished yet and most everybody else is, its making me feel like we are behind. I have to keep telling myself that we are not. But I do have to make sure that we get finished over the next two months. I sat down and wrote out my goals to complete for August to help me get this done.
- Princess needs to complete her current workbooks for math, handwriting and spelling; she needs to demonstrate mastery of her addition facts (something she is still struggling with;) and she needs to be able to complete the 1st grade essential skills test (to make Big Daddy feel better about her moving to second grade.)
- Drama Queen needs to learn to visually identify the rest of the alphabet (she knows a-d well, e-g a little bit, and a few other random letters), and start learning their sounds.
So we’ve got a little bit of work for us to do over the summer. But hopefully, we’ll get it all done and be ready to start school in mid-August.
Not that you need any tips from us novices, but here’s something that worked with my son who’s Drama Queen’s age, I think…
Get an alphabet puzzle. We have one that is a train, and each piece has a letter with an animal picture (capital & lower cases). Assembled in a row, it’s a great way to start learning the letters by appearance, and also gives us lots of games to play with sounds, order, etc.
We do year round school too and are aiming to finish up mid-July. Good luck coming down the home stretch!
We are also doing year round home school. I was pleased to find my pre k five year old trying to put the fridge magnet letters in order a couple days ago.
By the way, I like your blog. I’m going to have to point my wife to it.
