For a while now (several months) I’ve been keeping a shallow, plastic, bin/basket on the back of my washing machine for all of my wet handtowels and kitchen washcloths, etc. I’ve been trying to use more washcloths and towels and less sponges and papertowels, but I don’t like throwing a wet or damp cloth in the laundry hamper. Since the laundry room is just off the kitchen this is the perfect solution.

It happened one day by accident when I sat an extra little basket on top of the washer control panel and then later decided to toss a wet cloth in there instead of adding it to the laundry. I thought it was a great idea, so I kept it up. I can collect several cloths until I wash towels again and then add them to the washer. It also works well to hold items that are “casualties of bladder accidents” until the next load.

As an added benefit, the washcloths get washed more frequently instead of being lost in the dirty laundry and I’m actually able to have clean cloths around when I need them. πŸ˜‰

What’s more, this idea is so easy, takes so little work, and it’s not like the washer or basket is going anywhere any time soon so I’m sure that this little habit is gonna hang around for a long, long time. πŸ™‚

What a good idea! We have a washcloth mildew problem here… I’m definitely going to try this!

Great idea! Too bad my laundry room is in the basement!! It is always so gross to put yucky rags into the laundry hamper. I usually let them sit out until they dry but they look so gross! I need to try to institute something like you are talking about. Thanks!!

Perhaps you could put a basket like the one in the picture under your kitchen sink? At the end of the day or when you’re getting ready to wash the appropriate load of laundry, you could carry them down there. πŸ™‚

I use that exact basket lots of places. It’s the perfect size. It holds kids’ books, and papers and stuff, cleaners, you name it! Great idea.
