Description
Winter is the perfect time to build a read-aloud habit with your kids. The weather can limit time outdoors and after the whirlwind of the holiday season, kids often complain of being bored.
But why should you read aloud to your kids?
Reading stories to your kids:
- improves listening skills
- boosts imagination
- develops language skills
- creates a feeling of community and shared experiences
- builds your bond as a family
Additionally, current studies are showing that kids are reading less these days than generations before them; reading for fun is becoming less common. (If you don’t believe me, Google it!) Reading books to our kids is a good way to foster an interest in reading itself.
Where do you start?
I recommend finding books to read by one of three different ways:
- make a list of your own childhood favorites
- Search online for lists of Caldecott award winning books, Newberry award books, or books recommended by your favorite homeschool curriculum
- choose books that have been turned into movies so you can have a movie night when you finish (I have several “Book and Movie” posts with recommendations and information about each.)
3 Tips for Reading Books to Your Kids
- Start with a book you’re pretty sure your kids will love.
- Let your kids take turns picking the next book to read.
- Use a book log (like this free winter reading book log) to track and rate your reading adventures and plan a fun family reward with the log is completed. Repeat.
And that’s pretty simple! Remember that starting a new habit is hard, it may not happen every day, it may take time for the kids to learn to listen without interrupting, and that every page you read to your kids is a blessing in so many ways.
