Healthy Snacking

I’m a snacker. We have a snack every afternoon at three, but it’s late at night after the kids go to bed that I get really snacky. Since I’m up late cleaning, I want to go ahead and have a snack but I want to make it smart.

Here’s a list of some of my favorite smarter snack choices:

  • Yogurt – I buy plain yogurt and then flavor it myself with vanilla and a minimum amount of sugar substitute.
  • 100 Calorie Snack-Packs – There are a lot of brands offering these now, I like Quaker Cinnamon Streusel Mini Delights and Chex Mix Chocolate Caramel. Feeds the sweet tooth with a limited amount of damage.
  • Rice cakes – Yes, I eat those. Cinnamon Apple is good.
  • Nuts, in the shell – I eat peanuts or pistachios. Buying them in the shell means you have to spend time de-shelling them in between each one, which means it isn’t as easy to eat as many. (Whereas you can grab a whole handful of peanuts out of a can and pop them in your mouth at once.) Nuts do contain fat, but it’s a healthy fat and they’re also a good source of protein and other vitamins.

As you can tell, I’m a carb snacker. I don’t mind fruits and veggies during the day but when I feel “snacky,” I prefer carbs all the way.

Oh yea, I love those Quaker bag snacks. I get weight watchers ice cream bar…1 point…very yummy.

Hey! I love 100 calorie popcorn (mini bags). I also use the 0 cal/0 fat spray butter and basically drench my popcorn and sprinkle butter flavor on it. As you can tell, I love butter! This turns out great though, almost like movie theater popcorn! YUM! I also love blue bell creme pops (they are like popsicles, just with creme in the middle) and it’s only 70 calories for one!

little debbie swiss rolls, pickled redhot sausages. and salt & vinegar ‘tater chips.

I like lite popcorn (a whole bag is 4 points or something like that!), Skinny Cow ice cream sandwiches (2 pts, except the peanut butter which is 3), and ORANGES. Yes, oranges. I could live on them. I’m excited that winter is coming ONLY because oranges will be back in season, and cheap again! I buy the huge case at Costco… and I will go through that case in two weeks! Ok I let the kids eat a few, but it’s mostly me. 🙂

I have been making some mini nachos (6 chips with 1/4 cup cheese and salsa) to tide me over in the day or making mini muffins to keep on hand. It’s much less expensive to make my own and it helps me have snack food in the house when my budget doesn’t really allow for it. 🙂 My kids eat a lot of popcorn with either a raw veggie or fruit…

I love anything with sugar. I find if I can snack on something sweet I snack less in general. If I’m searching for something to kick the craving and I eat veggies I just go back and eat something else.

At least, thats what I tell myself!
